Buwan ng Wika 2014

    Last month, we had the culminating activity for Nutrition Month. This month, in celebration of Buwan ng Wika (National Language Month), we had the "Pista sa Nayon" where again, my students and I had a simple feast in our classroom. I was glad that my students never failed to cooperate in this activity. Bragging aside, and with all due respect to other sections,our class always has food to be shared compared with other sections in our grade. The food may not be a lot or extravagant, but this makes our section share a lot of fun memories as we consume and eat together the food that we prepared.



    It is really a joy to watch capturing my students in photos. I just enjoy the candidness of their shots and how they exude the energy and fun of being a child. These moments will never be exactly repeated so I always see to it to capture every moment. When they grow up, I hope these will also bring back a lot of happy memories of childhood and them being my students.

The student at the leftmost is Carlo. He loves doing wacky and funny faces. I don't know why but whatever he does to his face, he still looks cute...hahaha
   By afternoon, we had the coronation of the celebration king and queen,or the "Lakan and Lakambini ng Wika". And I was very proud because my student was the runner-up.

The future Miss Universe together with the adviser...hehehe


Of course, class groufie with our muse....hehehe
   P.S. I forgot to mention that this year's theme is "Wikang Filipino: Wika ng Pagkakaisa" (Filipino Language: The Language of Peace).

Lesson Plan in Math 6 (Integrated with HEKASI)

Hello...I just would like to share some of the lesson plans I use in my classroom. I am a Math teacher so most of the time, I would be posting Math lesson plans. I will not put any grade level since I think, Math topics are just spiral or articulated. If you find this applicable to your class, you are free to use this and hopefully give credit to the author (anyways, if you do not, it's ok as long as students will be benefited). I hope you find this useful.

Lesson Plan in Math (Integrated with HEKASI)

I. Objectives
At the end of the class, the pupils are expected to:
a. define expressions
b. translate word phrases to numerical expressions
c. write the correct numerical expressions
d. exhibit appreciation to one’s culture

II. Subject Matter

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Motivation
            Show picture of pre-colonial Filipinos.
            Ask: What can you see in the pictures? In what time of history you think do these pictures show?
            Discuss that Filipinos in pre-Hispanic times have their own system in counting numbers.
            Examples:
pu=ten             daan=libo                     laksa=ten thousand                  yuta=hundred thousand
angaw-angaw=million              kati=ten million                                    bahala= hundred million

B. Developmental Activities
1. Activity (Mini-Game)
            Divide the class into 5 groups. Each group must compete in naming the numbers shown in the flashcards. The first group who will have 5 points wins.
2. Presentation
            Explain to the students about mathematical expressions and phrases.
Example:
Word Phrases
Mathematical Expressions
Five times ten divided by three
Thirty increased by one
Eighteen diminished by nine
5 x 10 ÷ 3
30 + 1
18 - 9

            Let the pupils provide their own examples.

3. Exercise
Write an expression for the following:
1. your sister’s age more than seven
2. the year today multiplied by two
3. twice the number of your subjects
4. the number of your fingers diminished by the number of your ears
5. the number of chairs in the classroom divided by the number of chalkboards

4. Generalization
            How do we translate word phrases into mathematical expressions?

C. Application (Out-of-the-Classroom Activity)
Write an expression of the following:
1. the number of classrooms in our school multiplied by the number of armchairs in our room
2. the sum of pillars in the covered court and the number of coconut trees
3. the cost of arroz caldo in the canteen bought by twelve pupils
4. the number of mango trees over the number of acacia trees
5. the number of grade 1 classrooms less than the number of grade 4 classrooms multiplied to six

IV. Evaluation
Write the word phrase.
1.  (4 x 5) + 18
2. (18 ÷ 5) x ( 4 + 5)
3. 2 x ( 1 + 5)
4. 10 + 5 – 15
5. 89 ÷ 3 + ( 4 x 5)
Write the expression.
1. ninety twice added to thirty
2. six diminished by ten times three
3. four hundred over eight less than one

V. Assignment

            Write 5 examples of mathematical phrases with their corresponding translation to numerical expressions in a ½ sheet of pad paper.

2. Motivation (Physical Response Task)
            Show pictures together with the following statements. Let the pupils identify if these are true or false. If true, pupils must stand. If false, they must remain seated.
a. The earth is perfectly round.
b. The sun also spins on its axis.
c. The hottest planet is Mercury.
d. The faster an object moves, the slower the time.
            Let pupils defend their answer. Relate that there are also statements in math that can be true or false.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
             Peter has to clean 4 windows from four rooms. How many windows does Peter have to clean?
Discuss the following questions:
1. Who cleaned the windows? Why do you think he has to clean windows? Why is cleanliness important?
Let pupils formulate mathematical expression to solve the problem.
Ask: What mathematical phrase can be used to solve the problem? What makes your sentence true? What sign is used to show that your sentence is true?
Discuss that a mathematical sentence showing equality is called equation.
Let pupils realize that 16 is the product of 4 x 4. Discuss that 4 x 4 can be expressed as 42. Explain to the pupils about base and exponent.

3. Exercise
Complete the equation.
1. 17 –  ___ =  4 + 5
2. ___2 = 5 x 5
3. ___3 = 83
            64 = 64
4. 96 - ___ = ___ + 24
              72 = 72
5. 1 + ___ + ___ = ___ x 1

C. Application
Write the equation for the problems. Make your equation true.
1. Susie plans to have a rectangular flower box which measures 3m by 4m. What should be the area of the flower box?
2. A bacterium splits into 2 at a certain size. With such situation, the bacteria will have six splitting.
3. An order from a fastfood costs $60 with $3 VAT and a delivery fee of $10 each. Five friends each made the order.

IV. Evaluation
