I said on my previous post that I will just "copy-paste" some articles from the net. However, I was not satisfied by what I found especially about integrative teaching. Consequently, I'm back to giving my own perspective rather just "copy-pasting". And now let me present to you integrative teaching.
Integrative teaching is one of the emerging trends in education for the past years. It focuses on connections rather teaching isolated facts. For instance, a certain different subject may be integrated in teaching another subject (Like the content of Science be taught in teaching Language). With this, learners will be able to realize that subjects being taught to them are not separate and isolated field of knowledge, but are linked to each other in order to achieve understanding and concept attainment.
Furthermore, integrative teaching aims to connect what is learned in school to real life situations, thus it is more on developing problem solving and discussions of issues in the real world. Learners will learn to relate what they learn and apply it to their own daily lives.
In addition, integrative teaching involves consideration on the learners' individual differences. These include multiple intelligences and learning styles. The teacher therefore must present the lesson in various ways that can cater each learner's uniqueness.
Finally, when we say integrative teaching, we must remember the ABC domain of our objectives. The cognitive, behavioral and affective dimensions in teaching must be given balanced consideration. Values must be integrated in instruction across all subject areas. Through this, we are molding "integrated" learners, or well rounded individuals.
Examples of integrative teaching include Content-Based Instruction, Thematic Teaching, Focusing Inquiry and Generic Competency Model. Watch out for my post about these.

Is using more than one strategy in teaching one topic be considered an integrative teaching strategy. For example, in teaching one aspect of the normal distribution, I will use lecture, demonstration and cooperative learning. Will this be considered integrative teaching strategies.

Hmmm...I think integrative teaching strategies go beyond the choice of specific teaching strategies..Take note that "integrative" was derived from the word integration in which the purpose is to provide holistic context of learning. If you utilize different teaching strategies (e.g. lecture, demonstration and cooperative learning) for the sake of variety then this isn't enough to be called integrative teaching strategy. The goal has to be making meaningful connections and unity on the ideas and knowledge imparted to the learners. That what they are learning on the first place are not isolated or different from one another. Try to notice this on the four given strategies I have mentioned above and see how these strategies integrate a lesson in any subject area. You may refer to Principles of Teaching 2 by Corpus, Rigor and Salandanan(2006).

I think using different teaching strategies in one lesson does not defeat the objective of integrative teaching you mentioned here. The teacher can still connect the lessons learned by the students to their actual experiences even if he will use different strategies. What do you think? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes...your right...as long as the purpose of the teacher is the make connections and integrate the lesson, then using different strategies does not contradict integrative teaching. What I meant about my comment was using different strategies for the sake of variety or "para maiba lang" or "maging sari-sari ang presentation of the lesson" is not enough to consider it integrative. Again, the goal is to make teaching holistic, so no matter how many various strategies a teacher used yet failed to present connections, then it is not integrative teaching.
